Le Maximum is pleased to present Point of Contact, an exhibition by Anastasia Denos. The exhibition runs from February 5th to March 27th, 2022.
Using the body as a surrogate for the universe, Denos embraces the asymmetry between vulgarity and the sublime, debasement and transcendence. Working on the edge of intelligibility and chaos, she positions her work as a messenger for the unspoken, unknowable, and invisible.
Black holes, tunnels, spills, and splits merge with abstract figures in diverse media: a video displays a segmented body dancing with found objects; life-size “action drawings” utilize performance to create a frottage of the body’s core impenetrable essence; three diagrammatic still lifes pay reverence to the slinky through voyeuristic study; a false floor with scattered pairs of water wells resembling blank eyes look back at the viewer. Employing both conceptual and expressionistic strategies, Denos aspires towards truth and approaches abjection, opening the particularity of her body onto something infinite and universal.
Anastasia Denos (b. 1996, Los Angeles, CA) lives and works in Los Angeles. She holds a BFA from Hampshire College. Recent exhibitions include Unfolding at FokiaNou in Athens Greece and The Stuff of Your Nightmares at Betalevel in Los Angeles, CA.
